Event Details

Connect with industry health experts from May 21-24 at PRION 2019.

PRION 2019 unites researchers, clinicians, policy-markers and industry members from around the world to discuss emerging concepts in prion diseases and dementias with prion-like pathobiology such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s tauopathies and ALS.

Alberta Innovates is a provincially-funded corporation with a mandate to deliver 21st century solutions for the most-compelling challenges facing Albertans. Building on the province’s strengths in health, environment, energy food and fibre, and platforms such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and omics, Alberta Innovates is working with partners to diversify Alberta’s economy, improve environmental performance and enhance human well-being through research and innovation.

The Alberta Prion Research Institute, a part of Alberta Innovates, is funded by the Government of Alberta to support top researchers working on solutions to the serious scientific and socioeconomic challenges associated with prion diseases in animals and prion and prion-like diseases in humans. Its mandate is committed to research on animal prion diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy and chronic wasting disease and human neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS. The Alberta Prion Research Institute supports research projects that focus on innovation and invention by investing in fundamental and applied research that takes an interdisciplinary approach to solving the mysteries of prion and protein misfolding.

The Centre for Prions and Folding Diseases (CPPFD) was established at the University of Alberta in 2007 with a mandate to develop new insights into the biological processes of animal prion diseases and to leverage these findings to address human neurodegenerative diseases. The CPPFD is housed in the Brain and Aging Research Building; it is supported by the faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, Science, and Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences.
