About the Position
Join a dynamic and operations-focused team as the Manager, Maintenance, supporting the Edmonton Convention Centre at Explore Edmonton, where you will play a leadership role in ensuring one of Canada’s premier event venues operates safely, efficiently, and event-ready at all times.
Reporting to the Director, Facilities & Engineering, you will provide operational leadership for all maintenance activities at the Edmonton Convention Centre. You will oversee preventative and corrective maintenance programs, lead a skilled team of unionized and non-unionized employees, manage contractors and vendors, and ensure all building systems and life safety infrastructure meet regulatory and operational standards.
In this role, you will balance day-to-day operational execution with longer-term asset stewardship. You will help shape preventative maintenance strategies, contribute to capital and lifecycle planning, and continuously improve processes to enhance reliability, safety, and service delivery. Your work will directly support the Centre’s ability to host major conventions, cultural gatherings, and city-building events that drive economic and community impact.
This position may require occasional evening or weekend work in support of major events or urgent operational matters.
What You Will Do
- Ensure all building systems, life safety infrastructure, and facility components are maintained in a safe, reliable, and event-ready condition.
- Oversee preventative and corrective maintenance programs to minimize downtime and optimize operational efficiency.
- Lead service performance reviews and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Respond to facility emergencies and operational issues, coordinating internal staff and external contractors to restore service quickly and effectively.
- Manage contractor and vendor relationships to ensure quality, safety, and budget compliance.
- Develop and continuously enhance preventative maintenance programs to extend asset lifecycle and reduce reactive work.
- Establish systems, procedures, and performance metrics that improve workflow efficiency, tracking, and reporting.
- Conduct regular facility assessments to proactively identify operational risks and improvement opportunities.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately five maintenance employees within a collaborative and accountable environment.
- Oversee workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, and succession planning.
- Promote and model a strong culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
- Support the Director, Facilities & Engineering in advancing departmental initiatives and strategic priorities.
- Provide input into maintenance planning, asset lifecycle forecasting, and capital planning discussions.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure maintenance operations align with broader organizational goals.
- Advocate for operational needs to ensure resources are effectively allocated and priorities are met.
What You Will Bring
- Post-secondary education in engineering technology, facilities management, building systems, or a related technical discipline; a recognized journeyperson certification; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five years of progressive experience in building maintenance or facilities operations within a complex environment, which includes two years of supervisory or management experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Experience overseeing HVAC, electrical, mechanical, BMS, and life safety systems.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret building codes, regulatory standards, and collective agreements.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to assess operational risk and prioritize competing demands.
- Experience managing operating budgets and working within delegated financial authority.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
- Sound professional judgment, integrity, and discretion.
